THOSE DAMN LITTLE DOUGHNUTS

These are good for your health

As many of you know, I love eating foods that taste great but are bad for my diet. I continually amaze myself by finding new ways to abuse my body. My most recent adventure in gluttony involves Walmart which sounds as good as you might imagine. The Walmart that I patronize recently expanded and started to offer a complete assortment of grocery items. This location now sells meat, produce, frozen foods, just about everything you’d expect is a standalone supermarket. They also have a pretty extensive baked goods department.

The one item that caught my eye amongst all the baked goodies were all the small packages of mini doughnuts and doughnut holes. You can see an example of these offerings above. Such a package costs just a $1. One dollar will get you about a dozen or so little delicious doughnuts. I can’t resist them and I usually buy at least one package every single time. Though I try to pace myself, I wind up eating a whole package in less than a day. Thank you Concord Bakery for making such tasty treats! Walmart also deserves some thanks for leveraging their massive amount of buying power to get these doughnuts to me for a dollar.

3D VISUALIZATION

Same old content, now in 3D!

So the image you see above is this blog visualized in 3D. If you’re running Mozilla Firefox 11.0, you can actually visualize any web site in 3D in the same manner. It’s part of the inspection functionality where you can analyze pages. If you’re already running version 11.0, just press “Ctrl-Shift-I”. Then click the “3D” button in the lower right. Hold down the left mouse button and move to rotate the page. Here’s the large version of this blog in 3D. I am sure this feature is super useful for real web developers but for me, it’s just kinda neat to see.

WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?

The above trailer is for the new Three Stooges movie which is an attempt to re-introduce the comedy act from early last century. While the original trio has a special place in both comedy and cinema history, this new movie seems awfully dated for the modern day. There will always be a place for physical comedy in the entertainment world. Michael Richards’ portrayal of Kramer in Seinfeld and the Jackass movies are contemporary examples of the art form. The slapstick portrayed in the trailer though seems almost painfully unfunny to me. Is it because I’m just a cynical bastard that can no longer enjoy the simple comedy of that nature? I don’t know. What I do know is that the movie seems to faithfully recreate the hijinks that were in the original movies. The question is, does anyone find that funny anymore?

I TOLD YOU SO

So last Sunday morning, I’m in a Starbucks in lower Manhattan with my friend Tyson. We’re in line because there are a ton of tourists in this particular location since we’re pretty close to the 9/11 Memorial. I’m ahead of my friend in line. I get to the front and the barista takes my order and asks for my name. As many of you know, in such situations I default to the name “Bob”. My friend heard this and I guess curiosity got the better of him because when he got to the front of the line, his conversation with the barista went like this:

“And may I have your name?”

“Erwin”

“What?”

“Erwin.”

“Irving?”

“No, Erwin.”

“Oh Erwin.”

As we moved over to the waiting area, I shot my friend a “I told you so” look and he said he now understood why I do what I do in those situations. It’s quick and simple. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself. When someone in the food or beverage industry asks for your name, try it with my mine.

DADDY IS SICK AGAIN

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that I came down with a cold last night. It was a hectic last few days, with not a lot of sleep. Combine that with the interaction with who knows how many people in airports, the hotel, and on the plane I was in a good spot to fall ill.

2012 has been a terrible year for staying healthy. This is my third cold of the year already. I had a slight cold while I was in San Diego. When I came back, not a week later, I developed a full-blown, knock me out cold. Now I have this cold which is currently plugging up all my sinuses. I used to go a whole year with just one illness. I hope I don’t average one cold a month this year, that would be awful.

I’m going to crawl into bed and get some rest now.

A WEEKEND IN NEW YORK

Lots of glassware

I’ve mentioned in several posts about my attendance at a black-tie wedding. This explained my journey to find a suitable bit of clothing for the event. What I didn’t tell most of you, my loyal readers, was when the wedding actually was. After the four hour plus strata council meeting on Thursday night, I completed my packing and was off to the airport the next morning.

Now I usually pride myself as a bit of a veteran traveler and book the best possible flights to my destinations. In this case, though, I really dropped the ball and was unable to book the best way to New York City from Vancouver. For my money, the best flight to NYC is the non-stop Cathay Pacific flight CX888. It’s awesome for several reasons. First, it’s obviously non-stop but this route is serviced by a wide-body jet, meaning your five hour flight is on the most comfortable of planes. The first time I flew this flight, I was on a 747. Cathay now has switched to the more modern 777. Secondly, this flight and the return flight leaves at the absolute best times. Both flights leave local time late at night, so you’re essentially overnighting on the plane. You leave YVR at around 11pm meaning you don’t have to take that day off work and you arrive in New York the next morning, giving you the entire day to work with, no wasted time at all. You also leave JFK at night, returning to YVR at around 2am, meaning it’s quite possible to go into work the next day. I unfortunately, could not get these flights and was forced to change planes in Seattle on the outbound leg and then flying in Newark Liberty. I was able to get a non-stop flight on the way back but it was a very early morning flight which meant I had very little sleep the night before.

Anyways, once I actually arrived in NYC, it was a bit of a whirlwind weekend. I arrived at night in New Jersey which kinda sucked. I spent the night at a very plain and old Ramada by the airport. In the morning, I made my way to the real hotel that had been set aside for wedding guests. My friend who was getting married was someone whom I met while I was living at SJC during my grad school years. That meant there were other SJC alums who were at the wedding, so Saturday meant there was a lot of catching up to do. There was a bit of a “lads” dinner at a great steakhouse in midtown Manhattan and then the groom’s parents hosted a cocktail reception at a nearby restaurant.

The actual wedding was on the Sunday, so things didn’t get too out of hand at the pre-wedding party. On Sunday, we kept things light as we needed to be at the wedding venue by 5:300pm. I’ve heard and read a lot about Chelsea Piers, so it was great to finally be there in person. The wedding itself was fantastic, a very classy event all the way. My friend and his new bride should be congratulated on a high quality wedding. There wasn’t a whole lot of after partying that I could do because less than seven hours after the wedding reception ended, I was already on a plane on the tarmac at Newark Liberty on my way home.

This was my third time to NYC and by far the shortest visit. It should almost be a crime to visit that city for such a short duration but the trip was about seeing my friend get married and not about the city itself. I’m also still unemployed at the moment so spending time and money in an expensive city isn’t ideal right now. Even though I was there for only a few days, the trip was able to generate a few ideas for some posts in the next little while, so I’m hoping to share some anecdotes with you. Stay tuned for those.

LAST HOURS IN NEW YORK

It’s been a crazy evening so far as I’ve attended a wedding ceremony and then reception at Chelsea Piers; after which I had a drink at a bar that was perhaps too cool for me in the Meat Packing district.

I’m now just returned to my hotel room and hastily packed as I need to be heading to the airport in less than an hour. See ya soon!

SO WHAT NOW?

In my previous post, I mentioned the special general meeting that was scheduled this evening at my apartment building. A faction of owners who are represented by the developers of the building were trying dissolve the current council. It took over two hours of discussion before the vote was even held. It got a bit heated at times, as I had expected. To make a long story short, the developers’ voting block was able to use their numbers to push through the motion to remove the current council members. I somewhat expected this as they seemed to have the numbersĀ  (but perhaps not the moral high ground) on their side.

Since the building cannot proceed without a strata council, new members had to be voted in immediately. I believe there were eight people who nominated themselves to be on council, five of which were previously council members. There was nothing to stop the just removed members from being on council again. In the end, four of five previous members who wanted to be back on council were successful in their re-election bid. The remaining three members were new. One of the new guys seems like a good and fair dude and I feel like he has no connection with the developers. Another new member, I am not so sure about. First, I am uncertain about his affiliations with the developer. Second, he seems to think working with the developer on issues is an easy task and I’m believe he will be in for a surprise when he goes to work on council. The third new council member is someone I don’t trust at all. She appears to have clear ties to the developer and by law, she can’t even be present during strata council meetings where developer issues are being discussed. She’ll be absolutely useless in those matters and I also believe she’ll be using her powers on strata to advance the agendas of the developers and not the owners.

It was disappointing to see the whole council wiped out but the good news is the developer was not able to vote in their puppet strata council as I had feared would happen. With four of seven spots still being retained by previous members, the council appears to be still in good shape at keeping the developers at arms length. The drama is still far from over though. I expect some fallout from tonight’s meeting. Also, none of this mess had changed the fact that the building’s deficiencies, which are supposed to be fixed under the warranty, have not been addressed. It’s times like this I kinda wish I owned a house instead.

IT’S JUDGEMENT DAY

In a previous post, I detailed the dastardly efforts to remove the current strata council in my building. The effort is being led by a representative of the builders who constructed this apartment complex. They’re not even being sneaky about it and it’s clear to everyone what their agenda is. They want to elect a puppet strata council so that they can control what goes on in this building, most importantly what does and doesn’t get fixed. It’s a huge conflict of interest. In fact, a lawyer who has been advising some of the residents has said such an action would lead the developer open to a huge risk of legal action. By law, you can’t have a developer/builder influencing a strata council like this.

The vote is going down tonight. I suspect it’s not going to be civil based on what I’ve seen from both sides in the last few days. A lot of money is at stake here and money gets people’s attention more than most things. Depending on how the vote turns out, this may wind up costing me thousands of dollars. I’ll report back with the results.
