In a previous post, I alluded to wanting to go have breakfast in downtown Vancouver before going to bed. I have just returned from such an adventure. It was close to 6am this morning and I still had not gone to bed. I wasn’t feeling tired and I was hungry, so I hopped onto Skytrain and headed west towards the downtown core. I didn’t catch the first train headed west but it sure was one of the earlier ones. There were only a few people on my car and let me tell you, everyone seems pretty subdued when they have be on transit before 6am.
It wasn’t exactly wall to wall people at the stations but they were definitely more people than I had thought would be out at that hour. I arrived downtown a little after 6am and it was still dark out. It looked like it was still night time. The downtown core gets busy quite early but some of the other streets can be pretty empty until later. I saw a lot of hospital workers along Burrard near St. Paul’s. Once I turned onto Davie though, there wasn’t as many people. My destination was Denny’s. I could have chosen a closer location to go to but I wanted to be downtown. There were very few people in the restaurant, perhaps one other table. I ordered two scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, and sausage. My food arrived quickly and it was as good as you might imagine a Denny’s breakfast would be.
After my meal, I decided to walk down Burrard towards the waterfront. It was after 7am by this point and there were plenty of people moving about. I saw workers opening up shops and people going into office buildings. I walked by a local TV station and they were getting ready for an outside shot for the breakfast show. At the waterfront, I tried to see the sun rise but the cloud cover was heavy so it didn’t really look all that great. I decided it was time to go home so I did the reverse commute. As people streamed into the downtown core from the east, I headed back east.
It’s almost 9am now and I should probably go to sleep. I’m not sure how much more I’ve screwed up my sleep schedule with this little breakfast run. I hope I don’t wake up at dinner time.
